2017 River Clean Up
Take Action! The Middle Shuswap river needs your help to tidy up its shores.
To register for this event, please contact us to organize rides, boats, etc.
Oct 7, 2017.
Anyone with (or without) a human-powered water craft! SUP’s, kayaks, canoes, rafts are all welcome. Come on foot to help at the start, or volunteer as a host!
The 2017 River Cleanup Paddle Event will be held on the Middle Shuswap River. We will begin our cleanup first on-foot at the ‘Meadows’ campground. We will then get in our boats and paddle down to Wilsey Dam (Shuswap Falls).
To get to ‘the Meadows’, turn North off of Hwy 6 onto Sugar Lake Road. After approximately 5.4km from Frank’s store, you will see an unmarked gravel road on the left, leading you to the campground by the river.
How long will it take?
You are welcome to attend either the ‘on foot’ portion of the cleanup at the Meadows campsite, or paddle the river with us while picking up trash, or BOTH! The paddling will take 4-5 hrs.
We plan to be at Wilsey Dam around 3pm.
What to bring?
Please bring your own gloves, snacks, water, lunch, and appropriate clothing for the weather. Be sure to bring some cash as there will be a hot chilli (veg and non-veg) to purchase at the end of the day ($5) and drinks, prepared by the Mabel Lake Community Club. Boats and paddling equipment is not provided, but available to rent upon request.
Rental rates for this event are:
- Tandem Canoe $20 per person (all canoes are outfitted with all safety equipment)
- Solo Canoe $25 per person
- Paddle $5 per person
- Helmet $5 per person
- Wetsuit $10 per person
- PFD $5 per person
Please join us! We need your help to clean up the shores around the ‘Meadows’ campsite before we head downstream in our canoes or kayaks. You can also contribute by providing a shuttle at the end of the day for paddlers to get back to their vehicles.
Please note that some river paddling experience is required for this event. Although the river is low this time of year, it is not without its hazards. Please contact us to discuss your eligibility, or register here for a river canoeing clinic to help you prepare.
Transportation for up to 10 people can be provided from Vernon with their canoes at no cost. A shuttle will be provided for you at the end of the day to get back to your vehicle.
Available to Volunteer?
We also need some drivers! At the end of the day, we will need 1-2 vehicles at Wilsey Dam that are able to drive a few people back to Cherryville to pick up their vehicles. Please contact us if you’re available to help with the shuttle.
