Expedition Guide Training

This 6-day, industry-recognized course will prepare participants to be able to work as a canoeing guide on wilderness rivers with loaded canoes in up to class III whitewater.

This is an opportunity to learn the latest in rescue techniques and review best practices in risk management, client care, rescue skills, outdoor living, instructing, and much more.  The majority of this course is hands-on practice, and will have participants involved in all aspects of preparing and operating a successful river trip.


Duration: 6 days (3 day-trips to the Shuswap River followed by a 3-day canoe trip on the North Thompson River

  • $765 + GST tuition, and
  • RCABC Guide ($30) or Instructor ($65) membership, and
  • a meal to prepare and share on the trip!


BONUS:  Receive a 10% tuition and rentals discount on a 2-day river-canoeing course taught by a certified Paddle Canada and/or RCABC instructor in advance of the expedition.


Your Instructors

After travelling a combined distance of over 50,000 km by canoe in the wilderness, instructors Keiran Rankin and Charles Ruechel have learned a trick or two about operating a successful canoe expedition.  It requires an incredible diversity of skills; people management, leadership, canoeing skills, map reading, communication, back-country cooking, leave-no-trace camping practices, and tarp construction – to name a few!

The fine art and science to loading up a canoe. Wind River, Yukon Territory

  • are looking for an industry-recognized certificate in river canoeing
  • may not be interested in certification or a career in guiding, but just want to learn the tips and tricks to lead a smooth expedition
  • are neither of the above, but would like to join a really fun canoe trip as a ‘guest client’.


There’s a lot to know for even for an overnight canoe trip – we’ll help you learn and refine your skills for a fun, successful canoe expedition.



Intermediate-level canoeing skills are required to register for an Expedition Guide Course, and rescue skills are an asset.  Register for a weekend canoeing skills course in advance and receive a 10% tuition and rentals discount.



The first 3 days will be day-trips out to the Middle or Lower Shuswap Rivers, returning each evening to Vernon, BC.  The last 3 days will be a 3-day canoe trip on the North Thompson River near Barrier BC.

2021 Expedition Guide Course dates to be announced.  Shorter custom courses available upon request

2020 candidates create a kata-canoe to go down rapids on the lower shuswap river.
