The 'WILD CHILD' of the Peel river watershed

Please Inquire for our next trip date

Join us for a rare chance to participate in an exciting paddling and hiking expedition on the Bonnet Plume River deep in the Yukon wilderness.

The Tetl’it Gwich’in people (also known as the Peel River people) have relied on this river and surrounding land for generations, using its resources for hunting, fishing, trapping and gathering.  The Bonnet Plume, along with it’s sisters, the Wind, Snake and Hart rivers are deeply connected to the Gwich’in’s cultural heritage and way of life, as well as their ongoing stewardship of the land.

If you’re considering this exciting canoe journey, ask us about our bonus  50% off any 2-day whitewater canoeing course in advance of the expedition at Elements Adventure Co. canoeing school near Vernon, BC in preparation for your trip.

Character of the River

The Bonnet Plume, regarded by wilderness canoeists as the most technical and scenic of the 4 rivers of the Peel River watershed, The Wind, Hart, Snake, and Bonnet Plume rivers.  This Canadian Heritage River winds through the dramatic landscape of the Mackenzie mountains. The beauty of this river lies in the dense boreal forest, rocky riverbanks and subalpine terrain that is dramatically contrasted with the alpine tundra and open plateaus of the Bonnet Plume Range.

The crystal-clear waters of the Bonnet Plume alternate between serene stretches and thrilling canyon rapids, offering a dynamic paddling experience for adventurous canoeists.  Wildlife sightings are common, with moose, caribou, grizzly bears, and eagles often making appearances along the riverbanks.

The sense of isolation on this river can be profound, as it is far removed from civilization, creating an unforgettable connection to nature and the people you’re traveling with.

Who is this trip for?

  • “I want to experience true wilderness and stunning scenery.”
  • “I want to challenge and grow my whitewater canoeing skills.”
  • “I am looking for the time and space to explore my true adventurous nature, make new lasting friendships, and reconnect with the natural world in a meaningful way.”
  • “In addition to being safely guided, I want to participate and actively learn new wilderness canoe-tripping skills from the certified instructors/guides.”

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED: LEVEL 2+  (strong intermediate – ADVANCED)

Strong intermediate paddling skills and outdoor adventure experience is required.  An ordinary wilderness expedition requires a positive attitude, and a high tolerance for adversity and uncertainty.  These attributes are even more important on a trip of this nature – that has some challenging whitewater and possible portaging/lining to be done. Participants will need to be out paddling prior to the trip and are encouraged to join a whitewater skills course in the spring (50% off tuition and rentals).

  • stopping to play in a safe rapid
