HOW IS THIS EXPEDITION UNIQUE?

It’s not every day that you can be privy to the behind the scenes of planning and running a smooth wilderness canoe expedition.  As a ‘Guest Client’ on this trip, you will have the opportunity to sit in on theory discussion, practice techniques for teaching moving water canoeing and rescue skills, and learn the tips and tricks that guides use on and off the water.  In addition, you will be paddling a scenic and historic canoe route, thick with bears, moose, and the stories of miners who sought their fortunes along the riverbanks.

We offer this trip at a reduced price for guest clients, in exchange for your support in the professional development of the guide candidates – offering special opportunities to challenge the guide candidates, providing feedback, and real-life experience.

WHO IS THIS TRIP FOR?

  • “I want to use my intermediate-level canoeing skills to paddle some moderately challenging whitewater to improve my skills and experience in a safe setting.”
  • “I’m curious to learn the behind-the-scenes tips and tricks for running a successful canoe trip”
  • “I enjoy adventuring with new people and working as a team”.
  • “I’m looking for an adventure that gives me the space to connect with myself, the people on the trip, and to the natural world around me.”
  • “I’d like to paddle a small, lively river, that builds and flows into its mother river, and experience the autumn beauty of the interior of BC.”

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED – LEVEL I & II (Beginner to INTERMEDIATE)

Participants have experience canoeing on intermediate rivers and are confident adventuring in the outdoors. They are familiar with basic canoeing strokes and manouvres, have taken a river paddling course, and are comfortable around/on/in moving water.  Participants can expect to build on skills and experience in new and challenging conditions under the leadership of their guides in training and the instructor trainer.  Participants should be fit and capable of carrying their canoe and gear over rough terrain.

As this trip is part of a training course, we can also accommodate a few participants with minimal moving water experience, but who have strong lake-canoeing skills – and a keen interest to learn more!

WHAT WILL WE BE DOING (OTHER THAN PADDLING)?

  • hiking, fishing, snoozing, reading
  • learning about local botany, geology, ecology
  • learning river canoeing skills such as scouting rapids, group management, choosing safe lines through rapids, making safe decisions, swiftwater canoe rescue skills, and more
  • stopping to play in a safe rapid or surf wave
  • evening circle (debrief the day, review plan for tomorrow)
  • there will most definitely be cooking and eating delicious food!
