please inquire about our next trip date

Go gaga over Glaciers and Grizzlies!Β  This unique trip is all about the incredible glacier views, the historic salmon run and the abundant life supported by its icy water.Β  We’re looking for adventurous folks to paddle through the Coast Mountains and into the rainforest of Southeast Alaska – the heart of Alaska’s Tongass National Forest and the traditional land of the Taku River Tlingit.

It is for canoeists with intermediate moving water canoeing experience and rescue skills and a keen sense for adventure.

NOTE: The travel logistics for this trip are simple for our guests – book your flights in to Whitehorse, YT, and leaving Juneau, AK.Β  We’ll take care of the rest!Β  Remember to check your expiration date on your passport!

BONUS: This guided expedition comes withΒ 50% off any 2-day whitewater canoeing course in advance of the expedition at Elements Adventure Co. paddling school near Vernon, BC.

Through our partnership with Western Canoe and Kayak, you can also enjoy a 15% savings for in-store accessories to help you prepare for your trip.

Taku River Acknowledgements

The Taku River flows through the traditional territory of the Taku River Tlingit First Nation.

Elements Adventure Company is an equal opportunity provider and operates under a USDA Forest Service Special Use Permit on the Tongass National Forest.

Character of the River

This trip is a rare opportunity to canoe a river from it’s start, all the way to the end in the Pacific Ocean.Β  The Taku starts out as a small-medium volume river, with clear creeks with spawning salmon dotting the shoreline. The river here is fast and continuous, requiring good skills to navigate the many wood hazards in the braided channels.Β

Once the river leaves the interior and enters the land of the glaciers, it slows and widens, with icy water feeding it from the adjacent glacier melt.Β  You will almost certainly see grizzlies (aka. Alaskan Brown Bears in these parts!) fattening up during this time of year.

Near the delta at the river’s end, we’ll need to navigate the many shallow mud and sand flats to find clear passage to the Pacific Ocean, before braving the rugged coastline of the Taku Inlet to Juneau, AK.

Who is this trip for?

  • β€œI want to experience true wilderness and stunning scenery.”
  • β€œI want to challenge and grow my whitewater canoeing skills.”
  • β€œI am looking for the time and space to explore my true adventurous nature, make new lasting friendships, and reconnect with the natural world in a meaningful way.”
  • β€œIn addition to being safely guided, I want to participate and actively learn new wilderness canoe-tripping skills from the certified instructors/guides.”

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED: LEVEL 2Β  (intermediate)

Although there are no technical rapids on this route, Intermediate paddling skills and outdoor adventure experience is required.Β  An ordinary wilderness expedition requires a positive attitude, and a high tolerance for adversity and uncertainty.Β  These attributes are even more important on a trip of this nature – that has frigid water, fast current, wood hazards, and ocean wind and waves to contend with.Β  Participants will need to get out paddling prior to the trip and are encouraged to join a whitewater skills course in the spring.

  • evening circle (debrief the day, review plan for tomorrow)
  • there will most likely be some singing……
